framing a rectangle with an arched top

by Cathy
(gettysburg,pa,usa)

I need to frame a rectangle with arch shaped top...I was planning to use zinc on the sides and bottom and lead for the arched top....is the correct? and how would you install hooks/hangers.....

Answer

It will be fine although all lead would be fine too.

You can purchase Handy Hangers from most stained glass suppliers. They will solder on the back of the panel and will be soldered along the edge lead, covering up the solder joint that attaches the sides to the top.

Cutting Zinc for framing

by Rhonda
(NM)

New to stained glass, and trying to finish my first project with a 1/2in. U-channel zinc frame. What kind of cutters do i need to cut the frame pieces without crushing it? My first attempt was not successful, so i am stuck. Any tips would be helpful.

Answer

Depending on what you want to spend, here are 3 options.

You can purchase a came saw. They are available at most stained glass suppliers. They are expensive (200+ dollars), so you must decide if you would be using it enough to justify the cost.

Another tool is a chop saw, available at most home improvement stores or Harbor Freight (where I got mine). I bought one for under $25.

A third option is a fine tooth hack saw (it is important that the blade have 32 teeth per inch) and a miter box. Have a look Here to see what I'm talking about. This is my most used tool for cutting brass tubing and rods, zinc came, or any other metal I need to cut.

Framing a large round stained glass piece

by Kathryn
(Little Elm, TX)

I am making a large round piece, but don't know how to finish it. I have finished my rectangular pieces in zinc, which I like. Is there a bendable zinc that I can use to finish? How do I attach hangars?
Thanks!

Hi Kathryn,

I don't work with zinc. I only use lead came. You can frame your panel with lead, which will bend easily. You could either use H came or U came. We frequently frame with 1/2" H lead, then push U came in the outside channel to give it a nice finish.

If you want to bend zinc, you will need to purchase a came bender. The larger the diameter of the circle, the easier the zinc will bend.
