Antique Brass Patina - Does It Need Neutralizing?

by Elizabeth
(Dartmouth, NS Canada)

Hi, I have a bottle of antique brass patina but I've never used it before nor has my stained glass instructor. Does it need to be neutralized? If so, with what?

Is there anything else I should know about this patina and how to use it? I've only ever used copper patina before.

The patina is made by P Kay Metal Inc. in Quebec, Canada.

Thank you!

Answer

No, you don't need to neutralize the patina, but before apply it, wax the panel well and give it a good buffing. Yes...I said before as well as after. The wax cleans off any oxidation that has occured since you washed the panel, and patina does work right over the wax.

I love antique brass patina. It is a beautiful color, not as bright as copper patina. It is the one I most frequently use.

You might want to take a look at this page on my web site Patina.

Antique Brass Patina
by: Janey Kimpton

Do you have the address of where to purchase Antique Brass Patina? I love this and would like to purchase some. The bottle I have was made by Inland and was purchased 15+ years ago. I understand they no longer make it.

Reply...As far as I can find out, nobody makes antique brass patina any more. I have a couple of bottles that I keep under lock and key! It's my favorite patina and I don't understand why they have stopped making it.

Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
