best fume extractor for small shop

by Mary Adams
(Loveland, CO)

What is your recommendation on a good fume extractor for a small hobby bench to do lead came?

Answer

The Hakko Smoke Absorber is quite efficient.

For optimum fume/smoke extraction you really need a hood extractor that draws the smoke/fumes directly to the outdoors.

One can be made quite cheaply by using a hood from a stove and venting it to the outdoors. You need to be sitting under the hood while soldering.

could you recommend a more reasonable one
by: takinitslo

Thanks so much for your thoughtful response to my question.

I've spent alot already on this hobby. I have a spray boothe that I use for spraying pottery with glaze and it has a fan that goes to the outside; so I would use that area for larger projects that require a lengthy time. But, running it takes the heat out of the shop. Which is not too economical here in Colorado at this time of year; so Im looking for a little work table one for smaller projects. That is pretty expensive. Is there a little more reasonable option that you might recommend?

You might try to find a used fume extractor or look for a used air purifier. I found a near new Oreck air purifier at a garage sale for $5.00 last summer. Check out Ebay, Craigs List, your local paper.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
