Best Way to Begin Constructing a Window ?

30x43 interior window panel. Center has a Heron. Plan on 1 inch beveled frame. Some people say start in the middle and work out. I plan to copper foil entire project. That is, if you answer my previous copper foil question that that is acceptable to do.

Thank you for all of your help!

Answer

Always start on an outside edge and work towards the other side. You can either work top to bottom or side to side. Work on a board with framing strips on 2 adjacent sides of the cartoon and start building in the corner where the two framing strips meet. The strips give you some a good edge to work against.

Build on the cartoon and make sure each piece is exactly where it should be. That way there will be no errors.

Working from the center out can give you all sorts of problems with getting the window cemetrical, straight line absolutely straight, and so on. And...if you're using copper restrip, you have to start at one edge and run it across to the other edge. That would not be possible if you started in the middle.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
