Cellulose Sponge For Cleaning Your Soldering Iron Tip

The small cleaning sponges supplied with most soldering iron stands often need frequequent rinsing and water adding. I use one of these cellulose bath sponges sitting in a container of water. It lasts for hours without needing refreshing and wont burn as it is not synthetic. They are available in the UK from ASDA which is a subsidiary of Walmart.

Cellulose Sponge Container

I took a 1 1/2" thick cellulose floor cleaning sponge and cut it into a circle slightly larger than an empty tuna or salmon can. Soak the sponge and press into the can. The sponge stays wet a long time. I put a piece of non-slip material on the bottom to keep it from sliding around.

Cleaning a Soldering Iron Tip

I use a deep circular ashtray 3" in diam. and place two layers of celulose sponge in it with lots of water. That way the sponge doesn't dry out and when it gets dirty you can just flip it over and use the other side AND do that again with the bottom layer.

Cellulose sponge

Keith,
I like your idea. Before I wet the new sponge, I cut a hole in the center. I wipe my soldering iron in the hole. I find the sponge doesn't move around as much.

Geat Idea

That's a great idea. Those little sponges in the soldering iron stand are hardly worth the effort of getting them wet. I'll have a look at WalMart to see if they carry them here. Thanks for the idea.
