cheater tape

by Judi
(Tulsa, OK)

I am looking for "cheater tape". It is very thin cork adhesive backed tape that comes on a large single layer roll. It goes into the lead channel when you have a glass piece that is cut a little short, and you want a good fit. I know it has a correct name, and dont remember what it is called, or where to get it. I have looked thru the Delphi catalog and cant find it there. Can you please give me the correct name of the product and a source to buy it? Thanks. Judi

Answer

I've never hear of or seen it. If I have a piece that's marginally too small I just strip the heart out of a piece of lead and stick it in the channel before inserting the glass.

I have found that when there is a small opening between glass, the flat braided wire, used to reinforce your work, works wonderful if you cut a little piece and insert it, then solder over it. It also prevents the solder from flowing through to the other side of the piece. I buy it from Glass Crafters www.glasscrafters.com. They sell it in rolls of 25ft (#5425) or 100 ft (5400Q). It is the same thickness as the glass and fills in nicely.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
