Cleaning A Combination Of Came and Copper Foil

by Ann Sirles
(Birmingham, AL USA)

I made a panel with a copper foil soldered center design and lead came borders.

Is it ok to scrub the whole piece with full strength ammonia like I do with all copper foiled pieces?

I plan to finish the center design with black patina. I still use your instructions for cleaning with ammonia but wasn't sure how
it might affect the lead.

And if that's ok should I do it before or after I grout the came and clean the panel with whiting?

Answer

Hi Ann,

I honestly don't know how the ammonia would affect the lead, but my instincts say it would not be good.

I would clean and patina the foiled piece before it was incorporated into the lead. For those little bits around the edge that are soldered to the lead, just clean them with a q-tip and a commercial flux remover like CJ's. You can then use another q-tip and touch up any solder around the foil that needs to be fixed up.

The lead part only needs to be wiped well before you putty. You do not have to wash it. Brush it well with a natural bristle brush when you are finished with the putty and whiting. The lead will turn a lovely dark color that will compliment the black patina on your foiled section.

Cleaning a combination of lead came and copper foil NEW
by: Ann

Hi Sue,
I decided to go ahead and clean the whole piece with ammonia and see what happens. It didn't seem to hurt the lead came and it did a great job on the solder and cleaning the glass. After applying the patina wiping it and letting it dry overnight I washed the panel with liquid detergent. After that was completely dry I puttied the came and cleaned it with whiting. I also framed the piece using instructions that were published in Glass Patterns Quarterly. I'm attaching a photo of the finished piece.

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
