cleaning an old water prism

by Kathy Lyons
(Hathorne, Florida)

Hi,
I have an old water prism, about 20 years old. It has never leaked. It had some stains on the inside. I tried cleaning it and I thnk it has only gotten worse. I put vinegar and water in it. Did not work. I managed to get an toothbrush in it and scrubed the glass. Looked o.k. but when it dried the stains were back. Then I put baking soda in it. I think that did it in. It now looks worse. Any suggestions ?
Sincerely
Kathy

Answer

Hi Kathy,

I don't know if this will work, but try some Lime-a-Way. Squirt some in the prism, then top it up with water. You'll have to experiment with the concentration of the solution to get a concentration that works. You might have to use it without diluting it, but try the dilution first. Let it sit for a minute, then get in there with the toothbrush and give it a good scrubbing.

I'm a great fan of Lime-a-Way for cleaning up vases, coffee pots, glasses, etc. It has always worked for anything I've tried to clean, so hopefully it will work in your situation. Wear rubber gloves when you use it, and be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
