Cleaning antique zinc came

I recently acquired an antique mahogany stained glass door with zinc came from a monastery. I believe the age is around 1910. It was at one time used as a bathroom door in a residence. One side had considerable white spots on most of the zinc came which I gently cleaned off using steel wool. The white spots came off, which I assume was oxidation, but now it looks like I dulled the wonderful black patina. I don't know if the patina was put on by the maker or naturally occurred with age. It doesn't look bad, but should I do anything to restore the color? Also, should I wax the came? I have heard not to wax antiqaue came...what do you think?

Answer

The most I'd do is to brush the came with a natural bristle brush. It should bring up the luster of the came without having to use actual wax. Other than that, I'd leave it alone.

black patina for zinc
by: State of the Art, Inc

Your patina was a natural aging process. However, you can go to a stained glass studio and purchase black patina for zinc. Brush the patina on with a small brush, let set, then gently wipe dry. This chemical process will blacken the zinc back to its aged patina.
