Cleaning Flux off Foil That has Been There One Year
Hi Sue:
I started a bevel glass storm door (a kit)a year ago and then abandoned it.Both sides are soldered but around outside edge of a few bevels has copper foil with flux on it.
Is it necessary to remove the copper foil? Will it hold the solder? I just cut out pattern to fit around the bevels and form the straight edge around the pattern. What do you suggest.
Thank you
Emily
AnswerAll you have to do is wipe off the flux, then go over the foil with CJ's flux remover. If the foil still seems sticky, go over it again with fine steel wool. Just be gentle so you don't tear the foil when you're removing the flux. Once all the flux is off, just re-flux the foil and continue soldering. If you use steel wool, make sure you clean off all of the residue left behind before you start soldering.
If the entire panel is soldered except for the outside edges, and doesn't have hinge joints that would bend, you could wash the panel. Be very careful not to pull the foil loose on the outside edges. Wash it with Dawn dishwashing detergent, rinse, then dry well before you continue working on the panel.
