Colors of Glass

I am a newborn to stained glass. I believe it is the most beautiful artwork around. So, I have decided to try my hand at it.

I viewed the slide show (very beautiful work everybody!), and am wondering if different colors of glass have to be cut for each variation or do I paint on the various colors myself?

Thank you.

Nancy Hamilton

Answer

Hi Nancy,

No, we don't paint the glass, it is manufactured so that the color is already in the glass. To see how glass is made have a look Kokomo Glass Tour.

Stained glass comes in a huge range of colors and textures as well as price. When you are making a stained glass window, you buy the colors of glass that you will be using in your project, cut each piece individually, then put it together, similar to a jig saw puzzle, piece by piece. You use lead came or copper foil between the pieces, then solder it all together. That is a very basic and general description of the process. When you work with stained glass, you develop many skills from cutting glass to soldering as well as everything in between.

Glass comes in pieces/sheets around a square foot in size. Find a stained glass retailer in your area and give them a visit. I'm sure you'll be amazed at the variety of colors you can choose from. Perhaps that retailer holds classes as well. If you are really interested in pursuing stained glass as a hobby, you need to learn the basics by going to a class. It is extremely difficult, but not impossible to learn from a book.

Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
