Copper Foiling With an Electric Frying Pan

by Jim
(Brick NJ )

I was having trouble getting my copper foil to stick to my glass edges.

I washed the glass edges with water and soap detergent, then I cleaned the glass off with windex to get any oil from my skin off.

I still had trouble with the foil sticking properly so I took a electric frying pan on LOW and left the glass in there about twenty minutes so it would dry and warm up the glass. The foil sticks beautifully.

heat not needed NEW

The best thing to do for foiling is to not use any cleaning product at all after grinding. Dish soap and windex usually have some oil or lubricating product in them, making it impossible to get the tape to stick. Just rinse your pieces under running water and dry with a towel. Easy.

Getting foil to stick well NEW

A hair dryer works well to improve foil sticking, especially if your workshop is on the cool side. It also helps on those deep inside curves!

You can also use your hair blow dryer or the embossing heat gun that is used for other crafts.

Drying and Warming Glass For Foiling NEW
by: Vladimir

After washing the glass, place the glass on a ceramic tile (8" X 8").
I use paint remover electric gun to dry the glass and at the same time to warm it up for foiling.

Drying Glass NEW
by: Brad B

If you only have a couple pieces that need foiled to complete your project and you don't want to wait for them to dry after washing run a hot soldering iron around the edges quickly. Use pliers to hold the glass. Works like a charm.

Laying the glass on a heating pad also works well.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
