creating bottom of unfinished wooden serving tray

I have done stained glass and some mosaics in many forms, but have never made a serving tray. Do you know of any free patterns? I especially need directions as to how to proceed, what glue to use, what sealant, etc. Thank you for any help you are able to give.

Answer

I have only done a few mosaics, but never a platter. You will get much more help by going to a mosaics forum. I have always found This One to be very helpful.

Mosaics NEW
by: Sharon Vaerst

Ususally when I doa mosaic, either on wood or as a glass on glass, I use Weldbond. This is water resistant. Use just enough to coat the bottom of your glass pieces and make sure you cover the glass TOO THE EDGES so that the grout doesn't creep under when grouting. If I am doing something for outdoors I will use Hard As Nails for small projects. My spaces between glass pieces is usually quite tight and I will use an unsanded grout. If you're going to mosaic a clay saucer, make sure you seal it first with Weldbond mixed with a little water in order to seal it. Same goes for glass on glass, use a coating of straight Weldbond, let it dry and then proceed...everything will stick better. All of my outdoor mosaic pieces come in for the winter here in Northern Minnesota...otherwise you can be sure they will break. I have used styrofoam and just glued pieces on, grouted with white grout and then used acrylic paints to make many different grout colors after the original grout has dried. Then seal as usual, these pieces are for indoors. Make sure your glued is totally dry befor grouting no matter what type of mosaic you do. Sometimes it can take months. If a piece of glass pops off during grouting, clean the area and re-glue..sometimes I don't even wait for that glue to dry...I just plod on and grout it, just making sure it stays where I want it. If it falls out again after grouting, just glue it back again...mosaics are VERY forgiving unless it is a very detailed one.
Hope some of this helps you. Relax and have fun.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
