CREATING STAINED GLASS NUMBERS

by Natalie
(Baltimore, MD)

I have been attempting to make my first stained glass leaded transom and am having a terrible time trying to make the numbers! Since I am just beginning, I have not purchased a grinder which I am sure would make this whole process much easier. I was wondering if you had any tips for creating these numbers or somewhere that I could find or order a glass panel that might already have my numbers in the glass? The space I have for the numbers is about 5 x 11 (that is including glass that will be used for the background). My plan was to have clear waterglass as background and solid black numbers.

Answer

There are several books available with patterns for stained glass numbers. You could also look online for free number patterns, free patterns for numbers, or free number templates. One of those phrases should bring up what you're looking for.

You can use a carborundum stone to smooth the edges of the glass. It takes more "elbow grease" to gring glass with one, but they do work.

As for ready made pieces, I'm not aware of any.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
