Cutting Along A Straight Edge

cutting along a straight edgeWhen you are cutting along a straight edge, hold your glass cutter perpendicular to the glass, with the wheel of the cutter tight against the side of the straight edge. Start at the far edge of the glass and pull the cutter towards youat a steady pace. Be sure to keep your glass cutter straight up, and keep it tight against the side of the straight edge the entire length of the score.

cutting along the lineIf you are cutting to an exact size, do not put your straight edge along the line you will be cutting along. If you do, the glass will be too small by the size of 1/2 the width of the cutter head plus the entire width of the wheel.

Your straight edge should be a T-Square, L-Square or a metal ruler with a cork backing. If you use a ruler without a cork backing, the pressure of your glass cutter against the ruler will cause the ruler to slip and slide. I have many seen people cut an arc instead of a straight line because the ruler slid to the side, little by little, as they cut along it.
