Cutting Zinc for framing

by Rhonda
(NM)

New to stained glass, and trying to finish my first project with a 1/2in. U-channel zinc frame. What kind of cutters do i need to cut the frame pieces without crushing it? My first attempt was not successful, so i am stuck. Any tips would be helpful.

Answer

Depending on what you want to spend, here are 3 options.

You can purchase a came saw. They are available at most stained glass suppliers. They are expensive (200+ dollars), so you must decide if you would be using it enough to justify the cost.

Another tool is a chop saw, available at most home improvement stores or Harbor Freight (where I got mine). I bought one for under $25.

A third option is a fine tooth hack saw (it is important that the blade have 32 teeth per inch) and a miter box. Have a look Here to see what I'm talking about. This is my most used tool for cutting brass tubing and rods, zinc came, or any other metal I need to cut.

Cutting zinc and copper came for framing
by: Anonymous

My husband has a full size mitre saw, what kind of blade do I buy to cut the copper came and zinc for my stained glass projects? I don't want to buy a smaller saw for the same job, just a special blade. Thanks.

Gryphon Mitre Saw
by: Anonymous

Keep an eye on eBay for a Gryphon Mitre Saw. Set up a search and save it and check it daily. I bought a used one for less than $60 and it works great. There is one on there currently that is $79 but it still has several days until the end of the auction. Sometimes you can find someone who just wants to get rid of extra "stuff".

Thank you so much for your advice. I have been putting off finishing a piece for quite sometime due to this situation. Im hoping that the chop saw option will work for me, or I may resort to the miter. Thanks for making such an informative web site here for a beginner such as myself. Wish were were here to teach me a lead class!

Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
