Glass Mosaic pieces not sticking

by Pat
(Canada)

I have made a couple of mosaic glass tables for outside and after winter the tiles have popped up and the grout has dried out and cracked. I use tile adesive to glue them, but I was wondering what ideas you would have for the tiles not popping off or not sticking.

Thanks

Answer

It has been a few years since I made mosaics. I used both Weldbond and Liquid Nails, depending on which one I had on hand, to adhere the glass. The birdbath I made 10 years ago is still holding up well.

You really should bring your tables inside during the winter. The fluxuation of temperature causes the grout to contract and expand just enough to pop the glass loose.

Make em stick

Work that is for out doors needs two elements.
1 the understructure that the mosaic is done on is Hardy backer board available at home depot.
2. The adhisive is latex modified thin set available at tile stores. It is a powder and liquid that come separately which you mix together.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
