How Do I Hang Stained Glass Suncatcher?

by Shirley
(Australia)

Dear Sue

I have made a stained glass heart which narrows to practically nothing at the centre point where a loop should be attached. As there is virtually very little glass at the centre what do you suggest I do. I would like to hand a crystal from the centre, so should I loop a chain over this point to make a hanging loop for both uses. If I strengthen the centre with some wire would it be strong enough. Do you have any other suggstions?

Regards

Shirley

Answer

Hi Shirley,

If it was my work I'd definitely use two loops, as I have shown in red in the picture. Make sure they attach where the point of the tulip petals meet the outside edge of the heart. That will give a strong bond and prevent the foil pulling off, from the weight of the suncatcher.

If you just put one loop in the center, the heart will twirl around when it's hanging, and it will be difficult to get it to hang straight.

To be quite honest, I never use just one loop unless it's a very tiny suncatcher where two loops would be almost larger than the suncatcher itself.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
