How do you identify different types of glass?

Is there a site that can show me what each glass does and what it looks like? I buy mine from Hobby Lobby and my inventory has numbers but I don't know what kind of glass it is. i.e. cathedral or other kind.

Answer

You can find that information at Types of Glass

glass samples

My inspiration for lots of projects comes from looking at the glass pieces themselves, so I ordered a box of sample glass pieces from one of the glass companies. I realize that the glass pieces vary, but the samples have been invaluable in showing the shade of color, the amount of transparency, and the surface.

Different types of glass

Hi there, as well as the info Sue has provided, I have found the glass manufacturer sites helpful. Spectrum, Wissmach, etc have charts online of all their glass and go into descriptions on the types for a better understanding. Some basic glass books can be helpful. One book I have "Basic Stained Glass Making" has a chapter on understanding the different glass types with pictures. With so many glass types available I'm forever looking up the websites.

The site that Sue referred to has a list of all the glass manufacturers at the bottom of the page. When you click on the links, they open to each manufacturers glass sample page.
