How to make a Soldering Iron stand

by Michael
(Australia)

Soldering Iron Stand

Soldering Iron Stand

I have a great way to make your own soldering iron stand from a piece of tin.

The first thing to do is cut a piece of flat tin into a 6" x 4" rectangle with either tin snips or a jig saw, don't forget to wear your safety goggles when using the jig saw.

Once your rectangle has been cut, cut a 1" wide strip directly down the middle of the rectangle, 3" long.

Next is to cut a V from the top of that strip so your soldering iron has somewhere to sit.

These soldering iron stands are good because the overhang of tin catches any solder that might drip off the tip and is big enough that you can screw it to your work surface so it won't move.

Happy stained glassing,
Michael

dangerous

I agree with linston.

In a beginner glass class I recently took, the instructor pulled out a stand like the one pictured, they come with some of the soldering irons they sell. He told us a story about how a woman had purchased an iron with that type of stand in it, but also purchased a full sized stand to actually use. She had been working on her glass and left for the weekend. When she went back on Monday she realized that she had left her iron on all weekend. The iron's handle and part of the holder's coil had melted over the time, but if she hadn't used the larger stand, her whole home would have burned down.

Of course safety always needs to be considered when working with stained glass and soldering, but there are coil stands out there that are priced low enough that the extra cost is worth it. Just my two cents.

simple but risky
by: linston

making it was simple but a small vibration can cause the iron to slide.............burn something.......
also it can easily come in contact with something flammable......

What a Great Idea
by: Sue

Michael...what a great idea. That will certainly cut down on the expense of having to buy a soldering iron stand. It looks more user friendly than a lot of the commercial ones. Thanks for sharing,
Sue
