How to Turn Brass Edging Black
by Kathy
(Langley, BC)
I have just made a circular copper foil project and used brass edging to complete the project, how do I make this edging black like the rest of the project. I would sincerly like an answer. If not I will have to take it off and use lead came, and that would make it look a bit heavy. Do you have any suggestions.
Thank you
Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Hmm...that's a good question and one I've never been asked before. I did a bit of online researching and found only one product that turns brass an antique black. You can see it Here.
If you use lead, you'll still have the same problem, as the black patina for lead does not work very well.
Why don't you try some of the patinas you have on hand and see how they affect the brass. For instance, I have found that copper patina turns zinc black. It's not a permanent color change, as it will wipe off when you try to polish it. However, what I'm suggestion is to take a scrap of brass came and experiment. Something just might work.
Also, perhaps someone reading this might have some ideas and will tell us what needs to be done.
