Lead Came for Stained Glass Lamp Shade

by robert faires
(texas)

how and what type of lead came can you use to make a stained glass lamp shade? do you use the H shaped and just form it to the angles or the U shaped and use 2 pieces, one on each piece of glass? i am wondering about the sloping angles that are not 180 degrees or 90 degrees. thanks

Answer

I have never made a lamp shade using lead came, but I have repaired many of them. Repairing leaded lamp shades has been a majority of our repair business. Most of them break because the lead stretches and the glass falls out, or the vase cap pulls loose and the shade falls.

Most of them have been made with flat H came. I honestly can't tell you much more than that, so I'll ask other people reading this to tell us what they use/how they do it.

Lead Came Lampshade NEW
by: Patrick

I tried to bend a 3/8" H lead to an angle, but it didn't work. Other than 90 deg corners, I believe it would be difficult other than using two U came and soldered together at the desired angle. That would make it rather heavy though.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
