Looking For A Pattern or Suggestion

by Janet
(Campbell River, BC CA)

We have a lamp that hasn't had the shade for years. Can anyone provide me with a pattern or an idea how I could make a lampshade that would fit. The diameter is just less than 3 inches.

Thanks Janet

Lampshade idea
by: Sue

Hi Janet,

Here's a simple idea for a lampshade.

Find a bowl that is the right size and shape for your lamp base. Cover it with aluminum foil. Make sure you smooth it out. You don't want any lumps and bumps. Turn the bowl upside down. This will be your lamp form. Place a tinned vase cap on the top of your form.

Now you can use just random pieces of glass, or an assortment of nuggets in various sizes, or a combination of both. Working from the vase cap downwards, start soldering the foiled pieces to the cap and each other until you get to the bottom. You can have an irregular bottom if you want. It actually adds interest to the shade.

When all of the pieces are in place, fill any gaps with solder. Take the shade off the form and solder the inside. Edge bead the bottom, or you can solder a wire around the bottom to give it more strength if the shade is heavy or large.

Clean it up, add patina, and you have an unique, one of a kind lampshade.

One of my students used to make all of her lampshades like that. They were absolutely delightful.

Have fun with your shade,
Sue
