Paper Patterns Falling Off Glass When They Get Wet

by Bill
(Cincinnati, Ohio)

I have tried several different brands of spray glue to glue paper patterns to the glass. When I grind them & they get wet they tend to fall off of the glass. This is worse if the pieces are small. Any suggestions you can offer will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill

Answer

Here are a few ideas that might help:

1. Use UHU, Elmers or Avery glue sticks. These brands stick very well. The secret to success is to make sure the glue is dry before you start grinding.

2. Use double sided tape to hold the pattern in place. Scotch brand makes one that is on a dispenser. It looks like regular scotch tape. It works well to hold the pattern pieces in place. Just make sure your glass is clean before you attach the pattern pieces.

3. This is something I haven't tried, but it was recommended by another glass crafter. Put masking tape on clean glass and trace the pattern on to the masking tape. Cut around the pattern lines with an exacto knife. Peel off any tape that isn't part of the pattern. The masking tape isn't supposed to come off when you are grinding.

Let us know if any of those methods give you success.

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
