Patina Stain on Glass

Hi,

I have several panels with patina stains on the glass. I thought I'd have to live with it. Then I joined Warner glass chat and asked. Someone referred to your site on copper finish so I thought I'd check you out.

Novacan Stain Remover and toothpaste were advised for me to use. Do you have a suggestion?
Also, you said some people use white vinegar or salt in the black patina, do you?

I've been making stained glass for 3 1/2 years and I LOVE it. I'm going to put them in a business soon to see if they will sell.

Thank you in advance for your help.
Jane E Roberts

Answer

Hi Jane,

Have you tried the toothpaste? It has worked very well for me. Something else that should work is the Mr Clean Magic Eraser. I've never used it on patina stains since I haven't had any to try it on. However, I've never found a stain that it didn't remove, so if you have one, give it a try and let us know how it works.

I very seldom use black patina...I love the look of copper, but when I do use black I put salt in it. It make the black darker.

I can't guarantee this, but I believe that waxing before you apply the patina protects the glass from stains. I haven't had any patina stains since I started waxing first (which is part of my cleaning and applying patina technique).

Good luck with the sale of your stained glass creations,
Sue

Magic Eraser works
by: Anonymous

Magic Eraser works great, stain came off with very little effort. I tried to stay away from the solder lines and no patina (black) came off of them expect in one spot where it may have been a little weak to start with and it only lightened it. I didn't add salt or vinegar to the patina to darken it so it's not too noticeable.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
