Removing Glue From Glass

by Ann
(Hoover, AL)

Hi Sue,
I am repairing a round stained glass panel that was framed. It was framed in a round wood frame with the glass held in place with a flexible wood strip glued in place on the back of the frame. When the panel was removed from the frame the edges of the panel had a residue of hard yellow glue. Neither alcohol or acetone will remove the glue. Do you know of any glue remover that might work? Thanks for all you do to help all of us out here!

Answer
Hi Ann,

Have you tried Goo Gone. It removes glue, so it's worth a try.

If it doesn't work, my other suggestion is to scrape it off with a razor blade. The Goo Gone might soften the glue enough to make scraping a bit easier. If the glue doesn't soften, try warming it first to soften it up. I'd try a hair dryer, or even soaking it in fairly warm water.

That's all I can think of, but hopefully someone reading this will have more suggestions or have had experience removing glue and can tell you what to do.

Softening Yellow Glue
by: Twigbender55

Many people use Elmer's Professional Wood Glue to bond pieces of wood together. It does an excellent job. If too much is used, there can be a stiff yellow residue. The first thing I would try is to spray the residue with a water mist, then I would cover the area with a paper towel folded over several times and very damp with warm water. I'd leave this on for ten minutes or so before trying to scrape off the dried glue with a dull knife or screw driver blade.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
