Silver Back Foil Problems

HELP!!!

I have a terrible time getting silver backed foil to stick. I clean all of my pieces with alcohol before I foil, I burnish and check for bad places and burnish them again if needed and still I get parts of the foil that won't stick after I solder.

I don't have a problem with black backed or copper foil only the silver backed.

Thank you for all the wonderful information you have shared. Especially the water prism tutorial.

Thank you,

Ginny McKenzie

Answer
Hi Ginny,

First off, I have some questions:
1. Was it a new roll of foil or one that has been opened for a while?
2. Has the foil been stored in a very warm place?

Old foil that has been left opened will occasionally lose it's adhesive power. Foil that has been stored in extreme heat can do the same. If that's the case, get a new roll of foil. If neither of those are your situation read on.

Sometimes you will get a roll of foil that just doesn't want to cooperate. It sounds like you're doing all of the right things to maximize sticking, and I can't think of anything else you could do, that you haven't already done, to make it stick.

I'd suggest trying a different roll of foil, or a different brand. If you're using Venture foil try Edco instead. Take the bad roll back to where you purchased it and tell them what's happening. They should give you another roll, although I'd watch getting a roll from the same batch, as the same problem might possibly occur.

I'm sorry that I can't come up with a magic cure, but I do hope that what I've said makes sense and will help you.

Silver back foil Problem NEW

You site is wonderful...Thank you for sharing so much with us.
I recently came across a tip for foil problems like this one. Put the problem foil in a ziplock bag and place it in the fridge for a while. I tried it and after about an hour & half, it worked much better. Doing this made the foil stickier. Hope this helps you.

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
