The first lamp

by Katya
(Russia)

Although I appreciated that choosing a lamp for the second project in the life was not the best idea, I was so encouraged by Sue's detailed lampshade tutorial that I decided to try following all the Sue's advices at each of the steps. It took about a month to complete the panels (during weekends and after the working hours) and about three weeks of waiting for the lamp base and vase cap to arrive from Delphiglass (USPS was fast but Russian customs and post offices were definitely not) but now it's done. Had to mix copper and black patinas (I applied the copper one first and then additionaly covered with black) to get the imitation of the "old copper" - black alone seemed to be too sharp in contrast with the old bronze finish of the base and copper alone appeared too bright. The drawing is not a copy of one's work, I compiled it myself so if someone would like to have it, I would be happy to share.

Sue, thank you so much for the amazing lampshade tutorial - it was the real fun and pleasure to read and to follow :)

The Pattern NEW
by: Sue

Hi,

Katya sent me the pattern along with some comments that might help constructing the shade.
Here is a PDF file with the pattern. You will need Adobe reader to open it.

Pattern:
Katya's Lampshade Pattern

Her Comments:
Unfortunately I do not have the exact glass codes (articles) because that glass was bought as scraps and in this case the retailer does not mark the pieces. But I do not think it's critical because everyone can suggest an own color choice.

In addition I would note some things that might be useful:

1. The pattern is 1/6 of the lampshade and fits the 3" hexagonal vase cap.

2. If the lamp base has the switch different from pull chain or in-line (which sits in the wire) it's worth resizing the bottom part a bit and to make it slightly (may be 1 inch) wider to have enough room for the hand to switch the lamp.

3. In the process of assembly I soldered a thin (1 mm or 18 gauge) in each of the 6 sides to add some strength to the small details (especially in the bottom section. I had no reinforcing foil in hand but I think it would be even better and easier to use.

4. This drawing was scanned so it needs to be checked for accuracy before use - I had no intention to incorporate any distortions but they could appear in the process of scanning.

Thank you! NEW
by: Anonymous

Dear Patrick, Debbie, Kathy and Sue,

Thank you very much, indeed.

Sue, on Monday in the office (I do not have a scanner at home) I will scan the line (black & white) drawing with the dimensions outlined and send it to you.

Yours sincerely,
Katya.

Beautiful lamp NEW
by: Kathy

Hi Katya--your lamp is beautiful. It's hard to believe it's only your first lamp, and that you designed it yourself. Way to go!!!

I wonder how you could share a copy with those of us who would like one?

If Katya would send me the pattern, I could put it in the lampshade pattern section of the pattern search, or I could start another page on my site with original patterns that have been submitted here.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
