What Do You Use To Make Hangers For Stained Glass?

What type of metal do you make a hanger out of?

Answer

I assume you are talking about the loops you solder on your finished suncatcher or hanging panel. I use 14, 16 or 18 gauge copper or brass wire to make the loops. I then use chain for larger pieces and Tigertail (a very fine braided wire use in jewelery making) for smaller pieces, and attach it to the loops for hanging the piece.

There is a tutorial about making hangers/loops at How To Make and Attach Copper Wire Rings

Hangers NEW
by: Shrubcat

Hello,

I've experimented with few different things, but find that actually paperclips...what you say??? What I do is have two sizes, small ones and the larger ones. If you hold a paperclip I cut it in half then find a drill bit (the end that goes into the drill) the same size as one end of the paperclip. I then cross the cut ends over the drill bit and pull then tight, so that the ends are now on the otherside. I give it a small tap where the wires cross over (new the new loop) and then store them. When I want one, I measure it up for the suncatcher, trim the wire ends, flatten the tips horizontally (so it's smooth flow onto the existing solder) and then tin the clip and solder it, then attach it onto the suncatcher.

What People
Are Saying

You can't imagine how much I wish I had found your incredible website before I spent many hundreds of dollars on lessons, dvd's, tutorials, etc. I can tell that everything I need to know can be found here. All I can say is "Thank You!" Larry

I can't thank you enough for this site. The new search feature is amazing and it makes it so easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again! Laurie

Your site is fantastic! I took a six week class four years ago and recently started again (after forgetting almost everything I learned!). I have to say that your site is excellent and I can't wait to practice the techniques you've shown. Scarlet

I'm a subscriber to your "Stained Glass Gems" and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for your wonderful site! This is by far the best glass site I've run across. I recently purchased your publication on Patina FAQ and it's very helpful for me... I like to have hard copies of info so I added it to my library. Suzanna
