Zinc Came black spots

by John
(Missouri)

After soldering zinc came black spots appeared before I could wash off the flux. It only did it in a few places.

I have scrubbed with a powder, buffed with a pad and used elbow grease with a rag. The spots are still there.

What causes the spots and how do I get rid of them?

Thanks,
John

Answer

Zinc came has a protective coating on it that needs to be cleaned off before you solder. Go over the zinc lightly with fine steel wool or better yet bronze wool, then wipe it down with alcohol. Once that is done, you'll be able to solder it without the black spots.

Try the steel or bronze wool now. It should take off the black spots.
